Miriam J. O'Keefe

Miriam “Mo” O’Keefe, age 101, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering dedication to her family and community. Miriam was born at home in the Town of Buena Vista, the daughter of Arleigh John Hetzel and Mae Ruby (Newby) Hetzel. She grew up in the Almond area and graduated from Almond High School, now known as Almond-Bancroft School. On February 1, 1947, Miriam married Neal O’Keefe, and together they welcomed three children. Neal preceded her in death on June 28, 1979. In 1943, Miriam began her working career at Hardware Mutual, now known as Sentry Insurance, where she worked until 1947. She later dedicated 39 years as the bookkeeper at Almond-Bancroft School, serving from 1956 until her retirement in 1996. During those years, she cherished the students and was a proud supporter of Almond Eagle athletics. Miriam was a devoted member of the Almond United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Almond Historical Society, and the Almond American Legion Auxiliary Post 339. A true sports enthusiast, Miriam followed all sports with great passion. She even enjoyed watching the beginning of this year’s NCAA basketball tournament, as she was a fan of Rick Pitino. The Milwaukee Braves captured her heart early on, and she remained a loyal fan when the team moved to Atlanta. She loved talking baseball with her grandchildren and treasured every visit and conversation. After retiring, Miriam remained deeply connected to her community. She could often be found in the stands cheering on generations of Almond Eagle students, as well as traveling to support her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their many activities. Known affectionately as “Grandma Mo,” she extended her warmth and kindness to everyone—family, friends, and even friends of friends—always greeting others with a smile and a hug. Miriam guided her family with thoughtful words, steady wisdom, and genuine care. She embraced life’s changes with grace and celebrated new beginnings with youthful excitement. She loved visits filled with conversation, coffee, and sweets, often sharing stories from years past with a sharp and vivid memory. No matter your age or background, Miriam had a remarkable way of making you feel like you were her whole world in that moment. She was selfless, compassionate, and determined to live life to its fullest. Even at 101, she told her doctor she still had a lot of living left to do—a true reflection of her spirit. She was the pillar of her family, and her influence will continue to guide those who loved her. She is survived by two children, James (Gail) O’Keefe of Waupaca and Joan (Ted) Schlafke of Stevens Point; her loving grandchildren, Timothy O’Keefe, Peter (Melinda McClellan) O’Keefe, Shelley (Jason) Swanson, John (Stephanie) O’Keefe, Shawn (Wendy) Cychosz, Scott (Kendra) Cychosz, Ted (Jenna) Schlafke IV, and Jessica Miriam Schlafke; and her cherished great-grandchildren, Emma, Evan, Zachary, Connor, Jax, Ryker, Dru Marie, Beau, Isaac (Mekenzie Zimmerman), Rylan, Rory Miriam, Jules, and Jade. In addition to her husband Neal, she was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Sharon Cychosz; and her son-in-law, Chester Cychosz. A Funeral Service for Miriam will be held on Tuesday, March 31 at Almond United Methodist Church at 11 AM. Visitation will be on Monday, March 30 from 4-7 PM at church and again on Tuesday, at 10 AM until the time of service at 11. The family extends their sincere gratitude to the staff at Aspirus Stevens Point Hospital for their outstanding care. They also thank Teresa, Jason, and their team at Cardinal Grove Assisted Living, as well as St. Croix Hospice, for their compassionate support. A special thank you to Amy for her long-time dedication and love, and to Sherry and Jaden for their friendship and care, and to Dana, the family is also grateful to Dr. E.J. McKenna and his team at Aspirus Cancer Center, and to Hannah Sorensen of the Aspirus Plover Clinic – Vern Holmes Drive, for their kindness and compassion. Miriam will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. In Lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Almond-Bancroft Schools, Almond United Methodist Church, or the Almond Historical Society.
