Mr. Schlatter was an exceptional and patient JV Basketball Coach and a great teacher. Anyone paying attention to his coaching record would notice that his JV teams (freshman and sophomore) usually finished at the top of the heap in our conference. Those same kids went on to less than stellar records on the varsity teams. The only difference between those two teams was the coach, in this case a man who was self-assured, kind, patient, and willing to teach goobers like me how to play ball. Thank you Mr. Schlatter.

Dave, your family was amazing to grow up across the lake from. There weren't many of us out here at the time. Being friends in the class of 1975, playing in band together and having your dad as a teacher are happy child hood memories.

Our deepest sympathies to the Schlatter family. When I was offered a position at Waupaca High School, on my first day, Mr. Schlatter came to my office and gave me a word of advice, “Listen.” He was loved and respected by everyone. As golfing season approached each year he made a weekly trek to Mr. Riddle’s office to start talking about golf. He told of many basketball stories, recollecting the athletes and his coaching days with Mr. Colbert. He related many stories of students, and especially recalling their siblings, that he’d had in class. His smile was easy and genuine and he was always ready with a positive chuckle. My respect for him was so great, I could always only address him as Mr. Schlatter. RIP Mr. Schlatter, knowing you positively affected the lives and minds of thousands of students.

When I first started teaching in Waupaca Al was there. He was a great mentor and a good friend. We always joked that we were an All Star wrestling tag team. He was superfly and I the beast. He will be missed.

There’s not enough room in this box to share all the great memories that I have of Al and Joanne. So many meals together, so many 500 games, so many boat rides, so much fun.... One unique memory I have is when we took Al and Joanne with us to Canada to go fishing. We could always count on Al to roam around the camp and talk to everyone to learn where the fish were biting the best. That was how he earned his nickname, “Pierre La Pump”. We found that it held true when we got back home too. You could always count on Al to search out the best information.

Such good friends are truly missed.
