Berger (or Uncle B as we called him) was one of the nicest people we’ve known. He would do anything for anyone and never wanted anything for himself. Spending time with him in Waupaca was always something we looked forward to. He was always so happy to see everyone arrive to visit and spend time with him on the lakes. He was always so interested in how everyone was doing and truly enjoyed hearing about what was going on in everyone’s lives. One thing we always enjoyed were our nightly card games with him at the end of the day - probably more for the chance to hear his stories and laughing together.

There are so many good memories with him that my family and I will always have. I will never think of or visit Waupaca without thinking of him. Uncle B is forever missed but always in our memories and hearts.

It is difficult, if not impossible, to express in just a few words what Berger means to me. I call him Uncle B (as he is actually my great-uncle), but he has truly always been more of a grandpa to me than I think he ever knew. Of course I’ve heard the stories of his youngest years, but by the time I was born, he was living the part of his life I believe he loved most. In Waupaca he enjoyed the simplicity of the lakes, and his laid back personality was well represented there. He enjoyed sketching, painting, wood-working, and just relaxing on the deck while listening to the sounds of people enjoying the lake.

He never hesitated to open his home and share the beauty of Dake Lake and the surrounding area with me and my family. We’d spend the hot days on the lakes, taking long floats where I’d tie his shoe laces together for a good laugh or enjoying time in the boat. The cooler or rainy days were spent taking drives to explore the back-roads where he’d tell us stories of his life, how he came to love Waupaca back when the family would rent cottages on Nessling lake for vacations or just learning new things about the area. In the winter he’d help shovel the lake so we could have a skating rink or we’d go for walks around the lakes.

No matter what he was doing, Uncle B always put others first. He was happy if everyone else was happy. I will always remember Uncle B’s unselfish ways, his kindness and compassion for all and his love for us. He’s the reason I love being in Waupaca, and, while I’ll continue to enjoy coming to Waupaca for many years to come, it won’t be the same without him. I will always treasure the years we had with him.

Uncle Berger was such a kind and generous man. He always put others before himself. I have great childhood memories of him, and I can't say enough about how he accepted my growing gamily and allowed us to continue to be a part of his life. He and Bill shared so many Navy Day stories and they worked on so any projects together; they were truly good buddies. Berger was so good to our children and grandchildren. We'll miss him so much. He was sincerely loved.
