CHARLES N. HARWOOD
KING, WISCONSIN
FORMERLY OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN Age 89, passed away on Friday, February 17, 2012 with his family by his side at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, WI. He was born February 8, 1923 in Milwaukee, WI; son of Paisley B. and Sylvia E. (Rehm) Harwood. After high school, Charles attended Purdue University for two years before enlisting in the U.S. Army. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII as an Infantry Machine Gunner in 3 European campaigns. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in November 1945 in which he received a Purple Heart with 1 Oak Leaf cluster, a Bronze Star Medal, an Expert Infantry citation, and a Combat Infantry citation. After his discharge from the military, he attended UW-Madison where he earned his Bachelor of Business Administration – Marketing. Charles worked at Eaton – Cutler Hammer in Milwaukee for 31 years as an Assistant Manager of Purchasing in the corporate headquarters and Milwaukee manufacturing operations until his retirement in 1982. On September 6, 1947, Charles married Evelyn J. Fronsdal in Minneapolis, MN. She preceded him in death on March 31, 1998. He was a life member of the Milwaukee Association of Purchasing Management and was appointed as the first citizen member of the Milwaukee Co. Purchasing Standardization Committee from 1958-1985. Charles also received the annual Purchasing Progress Award in the Purchasing News’ for “outstanding contribution to the science and art of Purchasing”.
Charles volunteered at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital and Interfaith Older Adult Programs, Inc. He enjoyed and studied the game of bridge, wrote poetry and short stories. He will be deeply missed by all of his family and friends. Charles is survived by:

Three Great-Grandchildren: Zak King, A.J. and Penny Chase
Also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paisley and Sylvia Harwood; a brother, John Harwood; and a sister, Paisley Ann Harris. A Funeral Service will be on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the Main Chapel at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, WI followed by full military honors. Chaplain Wayne Schwanke will officiate. A visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 AM at the Main Chapel on Thursday. Burial will be on Friday at Wisconsin Memorial Park in Brookfield, WI. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Wisconsin Veterans Home, N2665 County Road QQ, King, WI 54946. The Holly Funeral Home of Waupaca is assisting the family with arrangements. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the staff of the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King and Chaplain Wayne Schwanke for their compassionate, loving care and friendship.
