Charles A. (Chuck) Lind
Pine River, WI
age 91 – died on Thursday, Novmeber 25, 2010. Charles was born July 30, 1919 to John and Lydia (Yesse) Lind, and baptized into the body of Jesus Christ on August 31, 1919 by Rev. A.E. Schneider at Poy Sippi. Charles attended Willow View Country Grade School and graduated from 8th grade. (Top eighth grade student in the county), after which Charles worked on the family farm, and at Kissinger’s saw mill near Brushville. Later Charles worked on the farm for Louie Buchholtz near Poy Sippi for several years. Charles worked for the Daisy Dairy Cheese Factory in Poy Sippi. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in February of 1941, and was stationed in Fort Lewis, Washington for basic training. He spent two and one half years there while on army maneuvers. Prior to Pearl Harbor they trained with sticks instead of guns. At one time they trained in the Mojave Desert in California to prepare them to be sent to the African Campaign, but instead they left San Francisco for Australia on July 25, 1943 for the Asiatic-Pacific area, aboard a troopship for 21 days. They spent 2 months extra training there preparing for island hopping of New Guinea the next two and one half years. Finally ending in Manila, the Philippines, Charles spent several months in the hospital, where the Army had taken over St. Thomas University. He left in September 1945 aboard a hospital ship for San Francisco, spending time at Army Letterman’s Hospital, then leaving for Camp Atterbury, Indiana to receive an Honorable Discharge from the Army, having spent 2 years and six months in Continental Service, and nearly two years and six months in Foreign Service. Charles was a PFC in the 60th Signal Battalion and was a lineman and truck driver. Charles received the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic – PacificTheater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze star, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal and (WWII) American Defense Service Ribbon.
In July of 1941 Charles along with his father and eight members of his family were confirmed at Emmaus Ev. Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod in Poy Sippi, by Rev. George R. Pape. They became members and it was a joyful day for them. Chuck was married May 4th, 1947 to Lyda Sattler at Emmaus church by Rev. John Pingel. They celebrated 63 years of marriage together. Their marriage was blessed with two sons and a daughter. After marriage the couple lived and worked on the home farm, and in October 1949 they moved to their present farm and home. They raised Registered Holstein cattle. Chuck was a member of the Holstein Assoc. for 60 years; he was a 4-H dairy leader and enjoyed entering his farm produce at the fair. In later years he took up baking cookies and entering them along with his prize winning sea foam candy. Chuck served on the Glendale Country school board, until it consolidated. He enjoyed hunting pheasants, deer, ducks, turkeys, and also fishing, especially ice fishing on Lake Poygan. Chuck enjoyed bowling and won numerous trophies. Chuck served many years as the Director of the former Farmers State Bank of Poy Sippi, which is presently Bay Lake Bank. Chuck was a rural letter carrier out of Pine River for 25 years. A member of the National RLC. Member of Fremont American Legion, and prior member of Anderson-Wendt Post of Poy Sippi for 66 years. Chuck was a faithful member of Emmaus Ev. Lutheran Church in Poy Sippi, and sang in the choir for 50 years. He also served on the church council as a treasurer and trustee.
Chuck is survived by his loving wife Lyda Lind, sons Michael (Kathleen) Lind, Phillip (Donna) Lind, daughter Patricia (fiancé; Bruce Hamilton) Lind, and good family friend, Felipe Gonzalez. Grandchildren; Nathan Lind, Matthew (Stephanie) Lind, Melissa (Nathan) Nadjowski, Sarah Lind, Stephanie Lind, Andrew Lind, and Derek Lind. Great Grandchildren; Connor Lind, Emma & Theresa Nadjowski. Sisters Carolyn Schultz of Ripon, Myra Schonscheck of Oshkosh, and Lida (Norman) Miller of Fondulac. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Helen Manske, Mae Dillman, and Irene Hilke, and three brothers, Norman Lind, George Lind and Junior Lind, and we look forward to meeting again in the Resurrection of all flesh.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at 11:00 AM, at the Emmaus Ev. Lutheran Church in Poy Sippi, WI, with the Rev. Mark R. Meier, Sr., officiating. Interment along with military honors will be in the Brushville Cemetery near Poy Sippi. A visitation will be held at the Emmaus Ev. Lutheran Church in Poy Sippi on Tuesday evening from 4:00 – 8:00 PM, and again on Wednesday morning from 10:00 – 11:00 AM. A memorial has been established in the name of Charles A. Lind. The Holly Funeral Home of Poy Sippi, WI is assisting the family with arrangements.
