Chris Nelson's Obituary
CHRIS (MYRTA) B. NELSON WAUPACA, WISCONSIN Chris (Myrta) Bartlett Nelson, Waupaca, passed away July 15, 2007. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, print and radio journalist, poet, writer, photographer, cat lover and expert at planning and attending parties.
Chris was born Myrta Bartlett in Rockford Ill. on June 28, 1934. She was the daughter of James Agard Bartlett and Helen Bartlett. Both predeceased her. In her teens she adopted the nickname “Chris” by which most people knew her.
Chris graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1956. She was a correspondent writing news and feature stories for the Milwaukee Sentinel and then the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for many years. Chris also reported news for several area radio stations, including WYNE and WOSH. She was one of the first talk show hosts, working for WAPL-AM and WYNE.
Chris attended the 1952 Republican National Convention, working on behalf of Dwight Eisenhower, the 1964 Republican convention on behalf of William Scranton, and worked hard in the 1968 presidential campaign of George Romney. She also worked on many state and local campaigns.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Peter, a son James (Laura) of Wauwatosa, a daughter Kathryn (Wayne Thompson), Waupaca, sister Mary Caskey (David), Rockford, Ill., and four grandchildren, Peter and Lowell Thompson and Courtney and Erik Nelson, and her sister-in-law Meredith Nelson of Mesa, Az.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Waupaca. Visitation will be from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Holly Funeral Home in Waupaca.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Living Waters Lutheran Community, Trinity Lutheran Church, Waupaca or a charity of your choice.
