David A. Shanklin's Obituary
David A. Shanklin, age 65, of Amherst, WI, passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, at his home, following a long battle with health issues and mental illness. He was born on July 2, 1959, in Waupaca, WI, to Gerald and Ruby (Pask) Shanklin.
David dedicated nearly 30 years of his life to working as a railroad conductor with Canadian National Railway Company (CN), where he became known for his commitment to the job and his love of trains. His passion for railroads lasted throughout his life, and he found comfort and joy in the steady rhythm of the tracks.
In addition to his love for trains, David had a fondness for John Deere tractors, taking great pride in his equipment. He also had a special place in his heart for animals, particularly the feline companions he cared for over the years. Music was another great love of David’s—he especially enjoyed listening to old tunes on the family jukebox or at local spots in the area, where he would often be found enjoying the sounds of the past.
David was a man of few words, but those who knew him best will remember him for his quiet yet steadfast presence and his love for his family. His warmth, wit, and the simple joys he found in life will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
David is survived by his partner of 40 years, Diane Stroik of Amherst; his mother, Ruby Shanklin of Iola; his siblings, Judy (Karl) Driebel of Iola, Terri (Steve) Stroik of Stevens Point, Cathy (Al) Kunst of Almond, and Marshall Shanklin of Amherst; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Shanklin; a sister, Bonnie Shanklin; and a niece, Carly Shanklin.
A Graveside Service to honor David’s life will be on Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at 10:00 AM at Greenwood Cemetery in Amherst. Pastor Gretchen Anderson will officiate. The Jungers-Holly Funeral Home of Amherst is assisting the family with arrangements.
