To the Gibbs Family,
If I were to share my memories of Dennis it would read like a War & Peace Novel. There’s no one memory….Dennis and I shared the experience of growing up together during a pretty wide swath of years.
While my family only vacationed in Waupaca, I spent my entire summers growing up and gaining life’s indelible experiences with this guy. You’d only need to meet Dennis just one time to realize that he was one in 10 million. He was great at everything, had the greatest personality, and was such a fun guy to hang with. He had so many interesting Hobbies too. And you were always bound to get some attention from the ladies if you were out and about rubbing shoulders with him! He had that popularity!
When I’d spent my summers in Waupaca as I child, I’d look so forward to seeing the entire Gibbs family. However, I had a special affinity for Dennis. To hang with Dennis was never boring. As young kids, we spent our Summers swimming on Dake Lake, Crystal River, or over at Camp Cleghorn. We did a lot of water skiing together…or maybe something slower-paced like Mini Golf over at Tom Thumb. Sometimes we picked wild raspberry or cherries or climb Apple Trees. We could be building Tree Forts by day, playing pool and listening to Pink Floyd in the Gibbs Basement, or spending hours reading his extensive Comic Book collection. Sometimes we’d talk for hours and just lay looking up at the stars on the Pfieffer (Spelling?) Boat House Roof. Again, never boring!
Dennis was always a hard-worker, very industrious. He always has an assortment of side-gigs he was into. But always found time to dream and to show his creativity….was quite the artist. He loved being a ‘bad ass’ type person (major influenced by Chuck Norris and Bruce Lee), but he never picked fights with people. He was just the kind of guy that was small in stature but mighty and would stand toe-to-toe with anyone.
Dennis and I loved to camp and build fires and chop stuff down. He was a real He-Man and Outdoorsman! I remember his wrist rocket, throwing stars, and his Polish Cannons.
We spent a good clip of time together through our early teens, and again when I came back to Waupaca after being in the Navy. Dennis was such a great influence and a great person to learn about life and share life with. Nobody I’d rather have had as a friend….words can’t describe what an influence this guy had on me and on pretty much everyone else that had ever been around him.
I’m sad to say that I lost touch with him in my adult life, it happens. But while I’m devastated to know of his passing at such an early age, Dennis is the type of person that becomes a part of you- Forever! When you rub shoulders with him you absorb his spirit and you’re changed by knowing this person. You couldn’t forget this guy if you tried.
I could go on and on….
My heart truly goes out to the Gibbs Family and I’m terribly saddened by your loss. However, you know what I’m talking about….this guy was larger than life! We’re all so much better people to have known him and shared life with him.
Best wishes and God Speed for healing hearts and only fond memories, going forward.
Love you guys,
