Dewey Sturzl's Obituary
Dewey J. Sturzl, 84, originally of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, died Friday, October 16, 2009, due to complications of pancreatic cancer. Dewey was born on November 12, 1924, and raised in Starks,WI, the youngest of six children of Budd and Adeline (Snow) Sturzl . Upon graduating from Rhinelander High School in 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, becoming a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne, 504th Regiment. He fought from
Belgium to Berlin and was part of Operation Market Garden and the Battle of the Bulge. Prior to his deployment, he met Alice Renee Giglio, in New York City; they were married on May 4, 1947 in Brooklyn, NY. After the war, he continued to serve in the National Guard, 1947-52. The couple moved to Rhinelander, where they raised five children and were active in numerous community and church organizations. Dewey
worked for the paper mill in Rhinelander as an accountant for 39 years.
Dewey and Alice retired to Mesa, Arizona for 20 years before moving back to Wisconsin 3 years ago to live in Marshfield near family. They recently had moved to the King Veterans Home in King, WI. Dewey was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, an avid Boy Scout leader, District Commissioner for the Scouts, and an Elks Lodge member. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, traveling, good food, and spending time with his family. Dewey is survived by his wife of 62 years, Alice, and five children: Mary (Alan) Moss of Highland Park, IL, Steve (Cora) Sturzl of Wenatchee, WA, Chris (Sue) Sturzl of Andover, MN, Brian (Deb) Sturzl of Appleton, WI, and Celia (Dave) Sturzl-Stanley of Marshfield, WI. He is further survived by 8 grandchildren: Garrett, Evan (Becky), and Janel Sturzl, Morgan and Duncan Moss, Alyssa and Travis Sturzl, and Gretchen Stanley. And one great-
granddaughter, Hailey Sturzl. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Budd Sturzl, Rosemund “Sis” Pantzer, Fern Wells, Rae “Chum” Firch, and Dahlia Hammond. A Memorial Service will be on Friday, October 23, 2009 at 1:30 PM at the Main Chapel at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, WI. Father Paul Vanden Hogen will preside. A visitation will be held from 12:30 – 1:30 PM at the Main Chapel at the Wisconsin Veterans Home. Burial will be at the Central WI Veterans Memorial Cemetery in King following the service on Friday.
