Age 100
Doris Galleske, age 100, passed away on May 24, 2025. She was born on October 18, 1924, the youngest of 12 children to John and Annie Stordahl on their homestead in the prairies of Eastern Montana near Fairview.
At the age of 18, Doris moved to Waupaca, Wisconsin, where she married Herbert Knueppel. Together, they spent many happy years on their small farm in Lind, raising two children. After Herbert’s passing, Doris later married Willis Galleske. The couple lived in various places throughout Wisconsin before retiring. In her later years, Doris returned to Fairview, where she joyfully reconnected with her siblings and numerous nieces and nephews.
Throughout her life, Doris held many roles, but she was especially proud of her time as a nursing assistant at the Wisconsin Veterans Home. Her dedication to caregiving was unwavering—even crossing picket lines to ensure the residents received the attention they deserved. She also owned a fabric store, Calico Corner, in Peshtigo, WI, where she shared her love of sewing with her community.
Doris was widely known for her talents in sewing, baking, and painting. Her family was lucky to enjoy her delicious meals, wear her beautifully crafted clothes, and cherish her handmade quilts—many of which earned blue ribbons at county fairs and contests. She proudly displayed these awards as a testament to her creativity and skill.
She will be remembered for her vibrant personality and zest for life. Doris loved music, dancing, and never missed a chance to dress her best. She was an amazing mother, grandmother, and friend—always generous, always spirited, and always full of stories that brought smiles to those around her.
Doris is survived by her son, John Knueppel; her daughter, Ann Marie Work; grandchildren Shannon (Heather Furtney) Groth, Shellie (Jim Niswonger) Nelson, Matt (Amanda) Knueppel, and Katy (Jeremy) Johnson; along with many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
A private service will be held at a later date.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the Thedacare Long Term Hospice team and to the staff at Park Vista – The Legacy for the compassionate care provided to Doris in her final years.
