Dorothy, known as “Aunt Toot” to many of her nieces and nephews, was born October 5, 1936, in the town of Hortonia, Wisconsin where her family operated a farm. She attended grade school in a rural schoolhouse, for which father cut and hauled firewood every winter to keep the schoolhouse warm. She graduated from Washington High School in New London in 1954. After graduation she worked for a short while at Zwicker Knitting Mill and then as a clerk at Pichelmeyers Pharmacy. She met Henry Scheller of Bear Creek, who had recently been honorably discharged from the US Air Force, at a dance. They were married in Dale, WI on December 30, 1954. The couple began raising a family in rural Weyauwega. In 1963 they moved to a small home on King Road, Waupaca, where they would raise the family and farm part-time.
While her children spent most of their day in school, Dorothy worked as a clerk at Neimuth’s Steak and Chop Shop for about 20 years. When her son Steve needed more help in the greenhouses, she went to work at King Berry Farm. She was the leader for the Chain-O-Lakes 4-H Club while her children were involved, a volunteer at the Wisconsin Veterans’ Home in King, she was active in the VFW Auxiliary and the TOPS club and volunteered in several capacities in the churches she attended. Her husband Henry passed away on September 28, 2003. Dorothy remained in the family home until moving into Bethany in April, 2025.
