Dwight J. Hucke's Obituary
Dwight J. Hucke, 68, entered into eternal life on Holy Monday, at his Nelsonville residence, surrounded by dear loved ones on March 25, 2024.
Dwight was born on August 2, 1955, to the late Raymond & Dolores (Soik) Hucke. Throughout his childhood, Dwight lived in Milwaukee, Wild Rose, & Stevens Point. Graduating from Stevens Point Area High School in 1973. Dwight united in a blessed marriage with Cheryl Dombrowski, on December 3, 1983. They celebrated 40 years this past December.
A military veteran, he proudly enlisted in the US Army at Fort Carson, Colorado, where he was a platoon Sergeant. While stationed in Germany, Dwight participated in the annual, 4-day, 100-mile Ruck march, carrying a 10kg bag of soil on his back. Being the tallest soldier in his platoon, he was last in line before the grand entrance of Queen Elizabeth whom was paying special visit to Royal Regiment of Artillery. Dwight was unable to make direct eye-contact with the Queen, for fear of breaking military stride & being reprimanded. He was honorably discharged in 1985. Dwight worked at his Uncle Myron Soik's potato business. Later being employed as rural mail carrier for Amherst Junction Post Office.
He leaves behind his wife, Cheryl, three loving children Carrie (Daniel) Murray, Jackie Hucke, & Thomas (Cassie) Hucke. Six amazing grandchildren children Gavin, Wyatt, Elisabeth, Jameson, Connie, & Regina. Sisters Doreen (Wayne) Dittburner, Crystal (Ken) Butterfield, & Renee (Steve) Hall and brothers Alan (Lori) & James. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Passionate about many things, Dwight truly enjoyed spending quality time with his grandchildren. There is now an angel in the stands cheering on his grandkids at their sporting events. He loved the Brewers, Bucks & Packers and if he wasn't in the crowd, he was watching and coaching from home. On Brewer game day, all you had to do was look at his multiple Facebook posts to get updates…"Time to look in the bullpen," "Wow…what an ending," "what a sweet game" during baseball season. Dwight loved watching Nascar racing on TV so much that he paused & replayed the big crashes for anyone who would come over. He was an avid Clint Eastwood fan who could recite most all Outlaw Josey Wales movie lines.
As a proud patriot, Dwight actively engaged in numerous veteran organizations. Dwight held the American Legion Post 6 in high-regard & became a strong contributor to the annual memorial flag distribution at four Portage County cemeteries. It meant the world to him that his grandchildren could share in this annual tradition with the flags. Dwight creatively upcycled the decommissioned wooden-doweled flags into newly designed flag art that he proudly gifted. With his eldest daughter as guardian, Dwight took a Trip of a Lifetime to Washington D.C. with the Never Forgotten Honor Flight in April 2019.
Dwight had a great sense of humor, attributed to his early days of Laurel & Hardy comedy reruns. Dwight acquired an abundant baseball card collection over the years, with autographed cards by legends Paul Molitor & Nolan Ryan. Active with the Horseshoe Team, winning many trophies while tipping back a few cold Point beers. Summer slowpitch league play at Royal Wood Sports Center, Plover. He was the Cribbage master & Scrabble Aficionado.
Hobbies include being an amateur geologist with unique rock finds from all around WI & Michigan. When enjoying a Mexican restaurant meal with Cheryl, he would order Camarones a la Diablo "extra hot" or takeout sushi, ordering anything smoked salmon or shrimp as his favorite. Dwight managed to answer most-every question on the popular TV game show, "Jeopardy" while relaxing after a long day of work. He would snap his fingers & say "oh-oh...ah...what is...then blurt out the correct answer." As if he got the extra brain power from quickly snapping his fingers.
Dwight was a true military aviation enthusiast, attending EAA air shows in Oshkosh WI. An avid outdoorsman, he loved deer hunting & was an active member of the Bluegill Commanders - Custer Chapter. Dwight easily caught a bounty of panfish during his fishing adventures that he would scale & hand-fillet to eagerly share with family & friends. "Huck" the ice-fishing king had many lakes he would catch the big ones, never wanting to give up "the secret hot spots."
His kind heart, quick wit, impeccable memory for history, stellar smile and smart comments will be missed. We will go on without you but know there will never be a day we don't thank God for the time we had with you. Rest without pain, fly high and we will continue to honor your legacy by living our lives to the fullest.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Never Forgotten Honor Flight, American Legion Post 6, or a blood donation. Shoot a game of pool or throw a round of Horseshoes in this legends honor.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 5, 2024 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 7379 Church St, Polonia. Rev. Mark Miller will officiate.
