ELIZABETH C. “BETTY” SPINDT
WAUPACA, WI Age 85 – died on Sunday, July 8, 2007. She was born on October 11, 1921 in Milwaukee, WI, a daughter of the late John and Lilly (Kern) Gerling. She married Eugene “Gene” Spindt on December 21, 1955 in Waupaca, WI. He preceded her in death on September 16, 1997. Betty is survived by her daughter: Reverend Ann (DeLyle) Spindt Henschel of Janesville, WI, her sons: John (Patti) Spindt of Waupaca and their children: Jason, Sherri, and Michelle, and Eric (Jacky) Spindt of Waupaca and their children: Luke and Emily, three great grandchildren, and two nephews: Richard (Sheri) Smith and Daryl Gerling. She was preceded in death by her husband: Gene, her parents, a brother: Harold (Bronte) Gerling, and a sister: Helen (Martin) Smith. Betty had graduated from Carroll College. Following her graduation she taught school at Lancaster High School. She next taught high school English and Speech at Waupaca High School. While in Waupaca she met and married Gene, and continued to teach through May of 1956. She later became a Chapter I tutor for 17 years until her retirement. She was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church of Waupaca. She was also an active volunteer with various organizations including being a Cub Scout leader, as an after school reading tutor, delivering Meals on Wheels, with the American Cancer Society Daffodil Days, with the local Red Cross Blood Drives, and with the Riverside Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary. A funeral service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Waupaca, WI on Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at 2:00 PM, with the Reverend Cathy J.N. Weigand, officiating. Interment will be in the Lakeside Memorial Park Cemetery in Waupaca. Friends may call at the Holly Funeral Home in Waupaca, WI on Tuesday evening from 4:00 – 8:00 PM, and at the church on Wednesday from 1:00 – 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in the name of Betty Spindt. The Holly Funeral Home of Waupaca, WI is assisting the family with arrangements.
