Elmer W. Benson's Obituary
Elmer Benson, age 98, formerly of Amherst, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2014, at Iola Living Assistance. He was born to the late Harry and Laura (Damrau) Benson on November 25, 1915 in Amherst, WI. After graduating from Amherst High in 1933, Elmer was employed by Copper Roof Corporation until he joined the military in 1941, serving first as a contractor for the US Army in Fairbanks, AK, then the US Navy during WWII. After honorable discharge, he returned to Amherst to build homes with his close friend Husky Hansen. He then became a millwright. On June 16, 1949, Elmer married Vivian “Clarice” Sannes. They had one son, Richard, born December 4, 1953. Elmer was a life-long member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Amherst. He was active in the community as a member of the Amherst fair board, Greenwood Cemetery board, St. Paul’s Church board, volunteer fire fighter, Waupaca Wood Carvers Club, Lions Club, and a 69 year member of the American Legion.
Elmer was a gifted artist and willingly shared his talents. Early on he painted, drew comic strips and did wood carving. After retirement, he concentrated on his wood carving turning out professional quality pieces that he sold at shows and shared with many. Elmer enjoyed being with family and friends, listening to his son Ricky play the organ, gardening, fishing, hunting with his nephews Randy and Gary as well as great nephews, the Packers, and was well known for his blueberry patch. He watched many hours of cartoons with special friends Seth and Bryce, sharing root beer floats.
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Richard; 3 brothers: Harry, Donald, and Leroy; 3 sisters: Marguerite, Mildred, and Goldie. He is survived by many special nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 203 Grant St., Amherst, on Monday, September 15 at 11 A.M. Pastor Don Johnson will preside with burial to follow at the Greenwood Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Monday at church from 10 – 11 A.M. The Jungers-Holly Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be directed to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
