Esther D. Whitman's Obituary
Esther D. (Miller) Whitman, 76, of Almond went to her heavenly home on June 30, 2026, after a brief illness, at Aspirus Hospital.
Born November 6, 1949 to Walter and Janet Miller in Tigerton, WI, she attended grade school in Windsor and graduated DeForest High School in 1967.
She married Larry Whitman on June 29, 1968, residing in the Madison area and starting their family, while working as a nurse’s aide at Madison General Hospital. The family settled in Almond in 1981, where she continued her work in the community, finally retiring after 20+ years of service to the Almond-Bancroft School District.
She will be remembered for her faith in the Lord and service to the community. An active member of the Almond United Methodist Church for nearly 40 years, she served in various clubs and committees, as well as teaching Sunday School. Over the years, she participated in many community organizations, including Portage County Homemakers, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Almond Fire Auxiliary. She was most proud of establishing the Fire Auxiliary Baked Potato Stand for Tater Toot, raising thousands over the years to provide equipment and support to the Almond Fire Department.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Larry Whitman, her daughters Angela (Gary) Wierzba of Amherst, Karoline Whitman of Wisconsin Rapids, and Emily Whitman of Almond, her son James (Alex) Whitman, of Stevens Point, her grandchildren Afton (Patrick) Pumper, Garrek and Griffin Wierzba, Aidan Whitman, Corrina Pliska, Rosalyn, Mahoney, and Magnus Knutson, and Orion and Aurora Whitman, as well as five great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, in-laws Fred and Rose Whitman, older sister Deette Miller, and younger sister Doreen Drescher.
The Funeral Service will be held at Almond United Methodist Church in Almond at 12:00 pm on Saturday, July 11th, 2026, with Reverend Tou Yeng Yang, officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 9 AM until the time of the service at the church. Interment will be at Guardian Angels Cemetery, Town of Almond, Portage Co. Lunch to follow at the Almond American Legion Post 339.
The family would like to thank the staff of Aspirus Stevens Point Hospital for their care of Esther in her final weeks.
