This may be a little long, but it’s a favorite memory of mine of Gene. I taught in what I still call. “the old high school,” which is now the middle school. So this story happened several years before the year 2000. My classroom was at the front of the building and had one of those long, tall, narrow windows. My desk was there and sometimes the sun was a little too much. I happen to find some black blinds that would fit that window. I brought them to school and approached Gene and asked him if he would be able to install them whenever he had time, there was no hurry. Well, as you probably know, it didn’t take him long and my blinds were installed, but they weren’t just hung up there in the window frame. He made a nice little wooden casement in front of them and they looked really attractive! I was always always grateful for the workmanship he put into that. Never mind the fact that he was always the nicest, friendliest, and kindest person to see in our hallways when he was working at the high school. And you know what? We moved out of that school 25 years ago. Those blinds are still hanging in the same window! I will always think of Gene when I go by that window. My sympathies to all of you in your loss of a good man. I want you to know how many people at the high school besides me sincerely appreciated his good work as well as his great work ethic. Till we meet again, rest easy, Gene.
