Eugene Guthu's Obituary
Eugene B. Guthu, age 81, of Waupaca, WI., passed away on Sunday, February 17th, 2008 while surrounded by his loving family at Riverside Medical Center in Waupaca. He was born in Ogdensburg, WI., on July 27, 1926, a son of the late Benjamin and Eva (Hansen) Guthu. His mother, Eva passed away when he was 2 years old. His father then married the late Irene Schmidt, who helped raise Gene as one of her own. Gene married Irene Wollslair on April 7, 1951 in Waupaca. Gene worked at the Waupaca Foundry for 25 years until his retirement in 1978 due to a disability. He was a Life Member of VFW Post #1037, DAV Unit 54 and the Cooties of Wild Rose. He was also a volunteer at the Wisconsin Veterans Home for many years. He served in the U.S. Marines in the Korean War and received a Purple Heart. He is survived by his Wife: Irene Guthu, Waupaca, WI; 3 Children: Diane (Friend - Bob Gabriel) Handrich, Waupaca, WI; Benjamin (Donna) Guthu, Scandinavia, WI; Pamela (Dale) Loken, Iola, WI; 6 Grandchildren: Troy (Heidi) Handrich, Green Bay, WI; Tom (Jessica) Handrich, Waupaca, WI; Trent Handrich, Waupaca, WI; Kyle, Kayla and Jace Guthu, Scandinavia, WI; 4 Great Grandchildren: Bennett, Owen and Carson Handrich and Kadin Woiak; 4 Sisters: Gertrude Waller, Waupaca, WI; Donna Winkler, Waupaca, WI; Ella Guthu, Waupaca, WI; Bertha Beyersdorf, Marion, WI; a Brother: Leonard (Caroline) Guthu, Waupaca, WI. Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by 2 daughters, Victoria and Beatrice, 4 brothers, Sylvester, Everett and Leslie Guthu and Carl Schiesser. Funeral Services will be held at the Holly Funeral Home in Waupaca at 12:00 (Noon) on Thursday, February 21st, 2008, with Father Paul Vanden Hogen officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Cemetery, Waupaca. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 10 AM until the time of the service at the funeral home. There will be a VFW serivce held at 11:30 AM on Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in the name of Euguene B. Guthu.
