Age 91 – died on Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at his residence in Amherst, WI. He was born on May 22, 1918 in the Township of Amherst, Portage County, WI, the son of James and Rose (Hollick) Berto. He married Ruthe Marie Helbach on December 27, 1941 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in the Township of Lanark, Portage County, WI. She preceded him in death on December 8, 2005.
Fred is survived by two sons; Daniel (Virginia) Berto of Georgetown, TX, and Michael Berto of Amherst, daughter; Jane (Leonard) Pascavis of Plover, nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and two sons-in-law; George Guyant of New Hope, and Ken Szymkowiak of Stevens Point. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife; Ruthe, two daughters; Jean Szymkowiak and Patricia Guyant, five brothers, and two sisters.
Fred had been a Shipping Manager at Menasha Corporation in Neenah. He had been a grocery store owner in Amherst for a number of years. He had also served as the acting Postmaster at the Amherst Post Office for a short while. Fred had served in the Merchant Marine on the Great Lakes. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Amherst. He also enjoyed hunting. A memorial mass will be held at St. James Catholic Church in Amherst, WI on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at 11:00 AM, with Father Robert Pedretti, officiating. Interment will be in the St. James Catholic Cemetery in Amherst. A visitation will be held at the Jungers-Holly Funeral Home in Amherst on Monday evening from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, and again at the church on Tuesday morning from 10:00 – 11:00 AM. A Rosary service will be held on Monday evening at 7:00 PM at the Jungers-Holly Funeral Home in Amherst. In lieu of flowers memorials can be directed to the St. James Catholic Church Building Fund in memory of Fred E. Berto. The Jungers-Holly Funeral Home on Amherst, WI is assisting the family with arrangements.
