GERTRUDE R. PHAIR
WAUPACA, WI (FORMERLY OF OSHKOSH) Age 96 – died on Friday, June 23, 2006 at the Angelus Retirement Community in Waupaca, WI. She was born on October 23, 1909 in Loyal, WI, a daughter of the late Albert and Florence (Baker) Davel. She married Alfred J. Phair on November 23, 1938 in Loyal, WI. He preceded her in death in 1984. Gertrude is survived by her children: Sister Rose Miriam (Mary Beth) Phair of Portage, WI, Michael Phair of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, John (Barb) Phair of South Bend, IN, Patrick (Mary) Phair of Waupaca, WI, and Margaret Phair (Ed Butts) of Geneva, IL, thirteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and four sisters: Dorothy Jean Schmook of Madison, WI, Madeline Krawczyk of Pulaski, WI, Jane Simpson of Minneapolis, MN, and Catherine Baab of Orlando, FL. She is further survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband: Alfred J. Phair, a son: Timothy Phair, a daughter: Pauline Phair, three brothers, and three sisters. Gertrude had been a homemaker for most of her married life. Prior to her marriage she was a registered nurse. In her early days of nursing she had done private home care nursing. She had also worked as a psychiatric nurse at the Winnebago State Hospital in Winnebago, WI. She had been very involved with the ARC (Association for Retarded Citizens) and was instrumental in creating neighborhood group homes in Winnebago County. She was a long standing member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Oshkosh, and had been a very strong supporter and benefactor of Lourdes High School in Oshkosh. She was currently a member of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Waupaca. Gertrude was an avid reader, and an excellent bridge player. She promoted and attended many artistic functions over the years. A funeral mass will be held at the St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Waupaca, WI on Monday, June 26, 2006 at 10:30 AM, with Father John Becker, officiating. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Oshkosh, WI. A visitation will be held at the church on Monday morning from 9:30 – 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in the name of Gertrude R. Phair. The Holly Funeral Home of Waupaca, WI is assisting the family with arrangements.
