Age 89 – died on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at Bethany Home in Waupaca, WI. She was born on January 20, 1920 in the Township of Buena Vista, Portage County, WI, the daughter of Archie and Ethel (Pierce) Smith. She married Everett Knight on December 24, 1941 in Waupaca. He preceded her in death on March 23, 1999.
Gladys is survived by three daughters: Patricia (David) Brophy of St. Louis, MO, Donna (James) Wyant of Clinton, TN, and Mary Abrahamson of Waupaca, her son: Michael Knight (Nola) of Amherst, seven grandchildren: James Wyant, Dee Dee Ring, Kelly Brophy, Teri Darby, Kari Abrahamson, Jeri Abrahamson, and Trevor Knight, and sisters: Norma Smith and Beverly Smith of Appleton. She is further survived by a brother-in-law: Clayton Knight of Waupaca, and a sister-in-law: Evelyn Smith of Waupaca. She was preceded in death by her husband: Everett, four sisters: Alice, Evelyn, Marion, and Velma, a brother: Floyd, and a son-in-law: Jerry Abrahamson.
Gladys had been a school teacher for a few years at the former Barton School near Waupaca. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, crocheting, and gardening. She was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and never missed a game.
A funeral mass will be held on Friday, December 11, 2009 at 1:00 PM at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Waupaca, with Father Brian Belongia, officiating. Interment will be in the St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Cemetery in Waupaca. A visitation will be held at the church on Friday from Noon until 1:00 PM. A memorial has been established to St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in memory of Gladys M. Knight. The Holly Funeral Home of Waupaca is assisting the family with arrangements.
