Gloria S. (Hurst) Derge's Obituary
Gloria Shirley (Hurst) Derge, age 83, formerly of 817 Grove Street, Beaver Dam, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011 while cared for at Silver Lake Manor in Wautoma. Gloria was born in Chicago, IL the only child of John and Norma (Steinhorst) Daugherty. She was raised by her grandmother Hulda Steinhorst, and her aunt Ormenta Steinhorst on Clark Street in Mayville, WI. Gloria was a 1946 graduate of Mayville High School and attended Oshkosh State Teacher's College. Later in life, she attended Marion College in Fond du Lac. In 1950, Gloria married her high school sweetheart, Robert A. Hurst at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mayville. Bob and Gloria were the parents of eleven children (6 girls and 5 boys) Thomas Hurst, Oak Hills, CA; David (Gina) Hurst, Hesperia, CA; Karen (David) Beanland, Loveland, Ohio; Rev. Paul (Rena) Hurst, Wild Rose, WI; Mary Venzke, Big Lake, MN; Ann (Doug) Holzschuh, Brooklyn Park, MN; Margaret Palmas, Phoenix, AZ; Patricia Limberg, Princeton, WI and Barbara Hurst, Dallas, TX. Gloria is also survived by seventeen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. In 1983, Gloria married Dale Derge. She enjoyed her relationship with four step-children: Susan (Allen) Schmid, Hartford, WI; Gene (Gloria) Derge, West Bend, WI; Glen (Ruth) Derge, Phoenix, AZ and Sherri Thompson, Hurbertus, WI; and fifteen step-grandchildren. Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands and two sons, Steven & Peter. Gloria was known for her generosity with baked goods, for sewing and quilting, and her involvement in her churches over the years. She traveled around the area giving a number of speeches at the time of her book promotion, No Valley Too Deep, published by Moody Press in 1978, which tells her story of being a single parent after divorce and her faith in Jesus Christ. She was thrilled to be a part of the Senior Writers Group in Beaver Dam, which recently published a book of collected stories entitled, The Second Story. A Memorial Service is being planned for later this spring. Holly Funeral Home in Wild Rose is assisting the family with arrangements.
