Gordon A. Peterson's Obituary
Gordon A. Peterson, age 95, of Shawano, WI, formerly of Waupaca, passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at Shawano Medical Center. Gordon was born in Saxeville, WI on November 18, 1913, the son of the late Alfred and Kitte (Colligan) Peterson.
Gordon graduated from Waupaca High School Class of 1932. He worked at City Service selling 6 gallons of gas for $1.00 with his best friend and brother, Norman. He pitched ball in high school and the City Team until going into the US Army in Sept. 1941. He was with the 7th Division Reconstruction Troop and earned a Purple Heart, four Campaign Medals with four Bronze Stars as well as two Presidential Unit Citations. He was Honorably Discharged on October 18, 1945 as a Sergeant. He married LaNah Telfer on January 18, 1946 and they spent 60 years together before she passed away December 17, 2005.
Gordon was Postmaster at Waupaca Post Office from 1954 to 1976. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. A life and charter member of VFW Post 1037 and was Commander in 1948-1949 and Quartermaster for 28 years. Gordon was Veteran of the Year in 1981 and 1983. He was a member of the Lion's Club, Masonic Lodge, 10 O'Clock Coffee Club, National Association of Postmasters, National Federation of Postmaster, Waupaca Conservation Club, Pitcher for Lakeman Baseball, former member of Knights of Physthia, Nomads, and the Curling Club.
He is survived by his daughter: Deiadra (Richard) Cook, Shawano, WI; his son: Daniel (Colleen) Peterson, Waupaca, WI; his grandchildren: George (Julie) Neubauer, Waupaca, WI; Dawn (Ken) Tucker, Greenville, WI; Bill (Shelli) Neubauer, Green Bay, WI; Gretchen (Del) Peterson, Neenah, WI; Dave (Anne) Cook, Minneapolis, MN; Sue (Mike) Brown, Oviedo, FL; Bob (Julie) Cook, Madison, WI; Abby (Randy) Miller, King, WI and his great-grandchildren: Alison Neubauer, Waupaca, WI; Ashley & Nicole Tucker, Greenville, WI; Elizabeth Martinez and Tristen & Mallory Peterson, Neenah, WI; Zachary & Spencer Cook, Minneapolis, MN; Julia & Michele Brown, Oviedo, FL; Austin & Ryan Cook, Madison, WI; Nathan (Nicole) Huitt, Milwaukee, WI; Jason Huitt, Fort Collins, CO; Brittney Tucker, Thornton, CO and Cooper Miller, King, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, LaNah and a brother, Norman Peterson.
The Funeral Service will be held at First United Methodist Church, Waupaca, at 11 AM on Thursday, April 2, 2009 with Reverend Cathy Weigand, officiating. Interment will be held at Lakeside Memorial Park, Waupaca following the services. Visitation will take place at the church on Thursday from 9-11 AM. Holly Funeral Home, Waupaca, assisted the family with arrangements.
Gordon touched many people's lives through his daily activities and involvement in his church, professional organizations, and community. His passion for excellence and dedication set a standard for all who worked with him. Gordon's integrity was beyond reproach. He absolutely loved where he lived. He loved his Country. He loved Waupaca. His sense of community was an inspiration to many. He didn't just live here, he lived the community spirit.
