Hazel M. Shulfer's Obituary
Hazel Marie Shulfer was peacefully released into her Lord’s loving arms on Monday, March 24, 2025.
Hazel was born April 4, 1934, on the family farm in Lanark. A daughter of the late George and Merle (Adams) Helbach. Hazel completed high school in 1952 and then went on to further her education at WI State College, known now as the University of Stevens Point. She graduated from there in 1956 and started teaching after graduating. Hazel taught primary education in Green Bay and West Allis and then took some time off to raise their children. Then in 1976 continued her education career with the Tomorrow River School District where she retired in 1998.
Hazel married Donald Shulfer on August 3, 1957 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Lanark. They lived in Milwaukee until they purchased their farm in Amherst in 1961. She enjoyed sewing, canning, reading, traveling with her family, attending local sporting events, and especially spending time with her grandkids. She loved just being on the farm and enjoying the outdoors.
Hazel spent her life serving others. She enjoyed volunteering at school, church, and helping families out by cooking and baking for them when needed.
Survivors include two sons, Michael (Veronica) Shulfer, Amherst; Gary (Michelle) Shulfer, Stevens Point; one daughter Elizabeth Slowinski (Kory Braatz), Stevens Point. She has one brother, Robert Helbach and sister-in-law Helen, Lanark, WI and another sister-in-law Betty Helbach at Whispering Pines, Plover, WI. Hazel had eight grandchildren: Rachael Henning, Lisa Henning (Tony Bartley), Rebekah (Morgan) Sheets, Theresa and Tim Shulfer, Zachary Shulfer, Philip and Carson Slowinski and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents George and Merle (Adams) Helbach; her husband Donald Shulfer; a daughter (Mary Henning) and son-in-law (Kurt Henning); and eight siblings Harold, Neva, Frederick, Joseph "Charles", James, Mary Ellen, Marcia, and Dave.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 5, 2025 at St. James Catholic Church in Amherst. Father Jerzy Rebacz will preside the mass followed by a burial at the St. James Catholic Cemetery.
A visitation will be held on Friday, April 4, 2025 from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at the Jungers-Holly Funeral Home in Amherst, WI with a rosary service to be held at 7:30 PM. Visitation will also be held on Saturday morning from 9:30 AM until time of the mass at 11:00 AM at St. James Catholic Church. The Jungers-Holly Funeral Home of Amherst is assisting the family with arrangements.
