Helen Sophie Engel was born in Waushara County near Poy Sippi on the 18th day of August in 1915, and baptized into the body of Jesus Christ on September 11, 1915. She was the daughter of Herman and Martha (Behm) Brey. Being the youngest of ten children she enjoyed a large family all of her life.
She was confirmed on August 19th, 1928 and married on May 16th, 1937, with Pastor George Pape, officiating. All of the celebrations were enjoyed at Emmaus Ev. Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod in Poy Sippi.
She married Daniel Engel of Tustin. They had six children, five of whom survive. Two daughters; Virginia Andersen of Fremont, and Diane (Keith) Rodencal of Waupaca, three sons; Gordon (Jane) Engel of Poy Sippi, James Engel and Mark (Roxy) Engel of rural Pine River, and a son-in-law; Duane Hanneman of West Bloomfield. She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel, her daughter, May Hanneman, a son-in-law; Dudley Andersen, and a great grandchild. Also surviving are twenty one grandchildren; Barbara Hanneman of Olympia, WA, Beverly (Bill) Tusler of Neenah, Bonnie (Bill) Colburn of San Diego, CA, Brenda (John) Gretzinger of Greenville, Brian (Karen) Hanneman of Milwaukee, Byron Hanneman of West Bloomfield, Craig, Mike, Brent, and Timothy Andersen of rural Fremont, Steve (Joni) Andersen of Pine River, Julie Andersen of Austin, TX, Tammy Rodencal of Keil, Todd (Marcia) Rodencal and Scott Rodencal of Waupaca, Shawn (Deb) Engel of Pine River, Barry Engel of Poy Sippi, John Engel of Pine River, Lyn Engel of Berlin, Laura (Jason) Meyer of Berlin, Jill Engel of Pine River and nineteen great grandchildren. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends. Also preceding her in death were five brothers; William (Bertha) Brey, Louis (Elsie) Brey, Edwin Brey, Arthur (Verna) Brey, and Clarence (Gertrude) Brey, and four sisters; Clara (Charles) Martin, Elsie (John) Timm, Ida (Rudolph) Anklam, and Lily (Elmer) Jorgensen, and we look forward to meeting again in the Resurrection of all flesh.
Helen was a life-long member of the Emmaus Ev. Lutheran Church of Poy Sippi. She farmed hand in hand with her husband, Daniel. She enjoyed cooking and baking, and she especially enjoyed the time she could spend with her family.
A funeral service will be held at the Emmaus Ev. Lutheran Church in Poy Sippi, WI on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at 11:00 AM, with the Reverend Mark R. Meier, Sr, officiating. Interment will be in the Brushville Cemetery, Township of Bloomfield, Waushara County, WI. A visitation will be held at the church on Saturday morning from 9:00 am until the time of the service. A memorial has been established to the Emmaus Ev. Lutheran Church – Poy Sippi in the name of Helen S. Engel. The Holly Funeral Home of Poy Sippi, WI is assisting the family with arrangements.
The family of Helen Engel extends a special “Thank You” to Dr. Jeffrey Carroll and the caregivers of Juliette Manor for the loving care given to Helen during her stay at Juliette Manor.
