Geraldine Reinke, my mother and former Living Oaks resident and friend of Helen, sends her sincere sympathies to your family at Helen's passing. Helen became a dear friend and source of joyful company for Geraldine prior to Geraldine's illness and abrupt departure from Living Oaks. Geraldine is feeling the void and greatly regrets not having been able to support Helen or the family at this difficult time. I knew Helen well, having had many enjoyable visits over lunch, and am better for it. She was a wise and caring lady of deep character, gifts she shared with everyone. What a treasure. When my husband and I bought a small cabin next to Carl & Helen on Lake Iola back in the late 80's, they were both very friendly and greeted us excitedly, especially because I loved to golf ! The first few years we were only "weekenders." After we moved into our place I would golf with Carl and Helen, learning about the game and how important it was to them to introduce us to the Iola Community Golf Course of which they were early members. I loved to help Helen do flower planting on the 5th hole each summer.
Helen was quite the entertainer and it was not surprising she would be up at 4 am meticulously preparing table decorations and favors for her guests. She would have me over to see what she had proudly created for them. Making krumkaka for the Winter Carnival lutefisk dinner was one of many proudest accomplishments.
She also loved her Garden Club and enjoyed creating beautiful arrangements for their flower shows. I being a lover of flowers would proudly let her pick any of my flowers she wanted to use out of my gardens, of course she always asked for my permission.
My sincere sympathy goes out to her daughter and family.
