John Marshall
"Hank" Bell's love of people and adventure provided my family years of happy, wonderful experiences as our neighbor on enchanting Lake Gilbert. Hank shared his time and boating experience with my sister Jane and I during the 1957-61 period we spent our summers at Lake Gilbert. seeing me on the beach playing with son Chip, I would hear: "C'mon John, wanna go for a ride?" "Oh Mr. Bell, can I??" And zoom, Hank would roar out of their beach and propel his powerful motorboat (the "CHIPCIN") through the choppy waters, as he circled the lake and provided me a memorable summertime thrill. Then he would tow Chip and Cindy out on skis (and other apparatus) as I became the "watcher" for his skilled skiers! The big thrill though was when Hank took my sister Jane out on skis. I gave Jane about a 10% chance of getting up on skis. However, with Chip's help, and Hank's skillful operation of the CHIPCIN, she got up!! But on her return to she shore, Jane held on to the ski rope too long, releasing it late and subsequently crashing into the Bell's pier. Everyone watching thought Jane had bought the farm. Instead, when Mr. Bell swung around to check on her: "Jane, are you all right??!!" "Oh Mr. Bell, I hope I didn't hurt your pier!!" Hank and Suzy and their extended family brought the Marshall family into their homes and their hearts. We have never forgotten the joy and happiness this family gave to us- which made all the difference in the summers we spent at Lake Gilbert. To Suzy, Chip and Cindy, I extend my sympathy on Hank's passing. I also pass along my deep appreciation to you, the Collins's and the Kendall's for sharing your Lake Gilbert days with myself and my family. The things our families (mostly the children) did together are replete with lasting memories. You are a wonderful, giving, compassionate family. Thank goodness dad bought the cabin next to yours...is all I can say. In parting I wish you all the best in what life can offer. Be well, be happy, love each other....and if need be, send me the bill for the damage Jane inflicted on your pier that day she let go of the rope too late!! My love to you all, John Marshall [email protected] 720-708-2617
