Henry H. Check's Obituary
Henry H. Check age 93 of Rosholt passed away on Friday September 30, 2011 at the WI Veterans Home in King under the care of special staff he called his “angels”. Henry was born on June 28, 1918 the son of Bernard and Regina (Omernick) Check. He attended school through the eighth grade and then worked on the family farm. His eighth grade education did not stop him from lifelong learning and an incredible desire to read. Henry married the late Evelyn (Gavin) Check on October 26, 1940. He joined the U.S. Army in 1943 and served for three years during WWII, primarily in England. This time in the service elicited a devotion to patriotism and a fondness for the British culture that he talked about often. Here he began his “volunteer career” working for the British and American Red Cross by collecting and delivering supplies to orphaned children. Upon returning to the U.S., he worked in Milwaukee at the Capital Building Supply Company and then moved two years later to the Rosholt area where he farmed for ten years. From 1964 to 1985 he worked at the WI Lions Camp in Rosholt as the Property and Grounds Manager. Here he enjoyed his love for nature, respect for individuals with disabilities and practiced his incredible work ethic. Henry’s retirement, living in Stevens Point, was busier than ever volunteering countless hours at the Lions Camp, Operation Bootstrap in Stevens Point and the Veterans Home in King. He also remained active in Legion and Lions organizations. He moved to his permanent residence at the Veterans Home in 2000 where he was very happy and developed many meaningful friendships. Henry is survived by two daughters, Barbara Zinda and Margaret (Paul) Larson, both of Rosholt; five granddaughters, Sara Zinda, Leslie (Ryan) Kuklinski, Brooke (Jeremy) Napiwocki, Allie and Elizabeth Larson; two great grandchildren, Ellie Napiwocki and Connor Kuklinski; four brothers, Nick (Ceil) of Stevens Point, Andrew of Ringle, Bernard (Pat) of Rothschild and Wallace (Linda) Check of Stevens Point; his sisters, Grace Pliska of Stevens Point, Elizabeth Sullivan of Arizona, Theresa (Bill) Gorski of West Bend, Mary Wanserski of Illinois and a sister-in-law, Elaine Check of Ellis. Henry was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Evelyn, two brothers, Thomas and Joseph Check and two sisters, Veronica Check and Josephine Pallen.
Henry’s words of “there is no greater feeling than being able to help others” dictates the need for all memorials to be given in honor of his volunteer service to Operation Bootstrap and the WI Lions Camp, his love of country to Rosholt Legion/Auxiliary and his respect for education and the privilege of reading to the new Rosholt Library. One of Henry’s favorite quotes was “what we do for ourselves dies with us, what we do for others and the world remains and is immortal”.
