John McDonnell
i had many excellent professors at beloit college.
john mcdonnell had the most profound effect upon me personally, and upon the arc of my professional life.
he was my teacher, mentor, friend. my john dewey and a.s. neill.
john, along with the beloit education dept (adelaide bingham, tom warren, roxy alexander) opened up the world for me.
and so i strode into it with openness and confidence.
direct practical experiences in education was the guiding principle.
field terms, internships, practicums.
those opportunities existed because john mcdonnell nurtured them.
through beloit college i had a field term in albuquerque, new mexicao, student teaching in leeds, england, and an internship in oxford, wisconsin.
and these stope were interwoven with time in big sur, california, fagasa, american samoa,
tours in the british isles and some of western europe (before the wall fell),
tuba city, aizona, boston, massachusetts, and finally lawrence, kansas.
none of this happens without john.
my friend and mentor.
rest in your summerhill, john mcdonnell,
embraced within all of our warm fuzzies.
thank you john mcdonnell
and thank you beloit college
