Rev. Jonathan Jay Wood's Obituary
Rev. Jonathan Jay Wood age 78 of Waupaca, passed away on Tuesday August 9, 2022. Jonathan was born on September 26, 1943, the son of Daniel and Atlanta Wood.
After his initial enlistment in the U.S. Army and Honorable Discharge (‘63-`66) Jon began ministry to the First Nations Peoples of Canada on Alert Bay, B.C. and neighboring Islands off Northern Vancouver Island. He married Nona Lee Sheets there on December 17th, 1966. Continuing ministerial studies while pastoring P.A.O.C. churches Dawson City, Yukon Territory (’67-’69), he received his Ministerial License to preach (’69), Hundred Mile House and Keremeos, B.C. (’70-’71) where eldest son Jonathan was born (’71). Continuing ministry in the U.S. they pastored on the High Line in Chester, MT. Jon received Ordination with the A/G in 1973 and Missionary Appointment with A/G Division of Foreign Missions (D.F.M.) now A/G World Missions (A.G.W.M.) to Japan as Servicemen's Representatives and Pastor of Yokota Christian Center, Fussa Shi, Tokyo, Japan (near Yokota A.F.B.)(’75-’78) where youngest son Josh was born (’76). Subsequent to their service in Japan they transferred to A/G Home Missions to serve as Director of Military Ministries for the Hawaii District A/G (’79-’85). While in Hawaii Rev. Jonathan Wood re-enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve and was placed on Active Duty serving in a new field of service as a Career Counselor culminating in early retirement as Chief Instructor at Ft. Mc Coy, WI (A.R.R.T.C.) as a Master Sergeant (E-8) U.S. Army (Ret.) while continuing to minister with local churches and Post Chapels (’91-’93). After early retirement from the military, he and his family traveled extensively in ministry with the A/G. Jon and his wife purchased a home on Spencer Lake in Waupaca, WI in 1999 continuing to minister at large in evangelism and church planting according to God's will.
He is survived by his wife Nona Lee Wood, sons Jonathan Jay Wood Jr. and Josh Randall Wood, brothers Rev. Richard Bailey Wood (Gloria) and Rev. Randall Lee Wood (Charceline La Rae) and numerous nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by Rev. Daniel Bailey Wood (Father) , Atlanta Georgia Wilkerson Wood (Mother), Danielle Wood (Sister).
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday August 17, 2022 at 11 am at the First Assembly of God Church in Waupaca, WI. Burial will follow at the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Wednesday August 17, 2022 at the church from 10 am until the time of service at 11 am. The Holly Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
