Leo Sarnowski's Obituary
Leo Sarnowski, age 91, of Wild Rose, passed away Saturday, April 7th, 2007 at Wild Rose Community Memorial Hospital surrounded by the love of his family, the one treasure he could take with him to heaven. Leo was born May 12, 1915, son of Frank and Victoria (Stahoviak) Sarnowski in the Town of Almond, Portage County, WI. On October 21, 1949 he married the love of his life, Erna Gisler in Wild Rose. Leo was a builder and accomplished woodworker. He also served as the first Zoning Administrator for Waushara County before his retirement. Leo was an active member of the Wild Rose United Methodist Church. Leo sang in the choir and served his church in many capacities. He was especially proud to be a Volunteer in Missions, joining other builders and craftsmen in building a church in Montana for the Black Feet Indian Tribe. Leo was a charter member of the Wild Rose Lions Club and has remained active for over 50 years. He was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship and received many other awards. Leo also proudly served his community. He was Village President, Village Marshal, a member of the Wild Rose Hospital Board and a fund raiser for the present hospital. He was also a lifetime member of the Wild Rose Fire Department. Leo was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was one of the first in the state of Wisconsin to be issued an Archers License. Leo and his buddy, Ollie Hansel were the first in the area to bow hunt. He also helped to establish the Wild Rose Rod and Gun Club. Leo was a member of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress for many years. He was also a member of the Over the Hill Barbershoppers and enjoyed singing with them in many performances. Leo's pride and joy was his family. He is survived by Wife: Erna Sarnowski, Wild Rose; Children: Christine (Carl) Rosin, Wild Rose; David (Barb) Sarnowski, La Farge, WI; Janie (David) Baur, Houston, TX; Grandchildren: Mark (fiancee, Kelly Farmer) Rosin, Houston, TX; Andy Rosin, Wild Rose; Anne (Kyle) Wiest, Collegeville, PA; Mary Beth Sarnowski, Port Royal, SC; Sisters-in-law: Lillian Sarnowski, Stevens Point; Myrna Lawyer, Zapata, TX. Leo is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Bruno, Raymond, John, and Emil; two sisters, Hattie Korleski and Pauline Nohr. A funeral service will be held 1:00 PM on Thursday, April 12, 2007 at the Wild Rose United Methodist Church with Reverend Diane R. Fite officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Wild Rose. A visitation will be held Wednesday from 4 until 8 PM at the Holly Funeral Home in Wild Rose and on Thursday at the church from 12 noon until the time of the service. A memorial has been established in Leo's name.
