Paul M. Chandler's Obituary
Paul M. Chandler Age 78 of Amherst, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 6, 2025. Born and raised in South Bend, Indiana. Paul was a 1964 graduate of St. Joseph’s High School and a 1968 graduate of Indiana University, of which he was very proud to be a Hoosier alumnus. After 40 plus years in South Bend, Paul worked nearly 20 years in Cleveland OH before retiring in Amherst in 2007.
Paul was a great father and grandfather and had a wide variety of interests. Paul loved the outdoors being an avid fisherman and hunter. He was also a big dog lover (especially of Golden Retrievers). Paul was extremely intelligent and well read. He had numerous letters published including in the South Bend Tribune, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, Outdoor Life and Sports Illustrated magazines. Paul was an avid reader and historian focusing on American History (The Old West) and the Gangster mobs of the 1920’s-30’s. Paul and his wife Carolyn visited all 50 states in their lifetimes. Paul made a point to show his two children as much of the country as possible during their childhoods on vacations. Paul also had a huge passion for sports and horse racing. He loved those two things and even wagered a dollar or two every once in a while. Paul played on some highly competitive softball teams in the 1980’s as a pitcher and was once teammates with Hall of Fame QB Joe Montana for a few years. After his playing career was over, Paul became an umpire for over 2 decades. Paul spent a lot of time as a volunteer in retirement with The Tomorrow River Lions, The Tomorrow River Conservation Club, The Glacier Woods Gobblers Chapter of the NWTF and Wisconsin Wildlife Federation were all glad to have Paul’s help and input on their endeavors. Paul also was very proud of how diverse his music tastes were. From the Big Band era, to Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, the Rolling Stones, Crosby Stills and Nash, Toby Keith, Sade and The Culture Club there is some vast differences in there.
More than anything else, Grandpa Paul loved to be at his grandchildren’s sporting events. Whether it was baseball, basketball, football, softball, lacrosse, ice hockey, figure skating or soccer Paul was always there supporting his family.
Paul is survived by his children Scott (Jennifer) Chandler of Amherst Jct., WI and Melanie (Ken) Voll of Avon, OH; his grandchildren Ashlyn, Aubrey and Braeden Chandler, Danica and Alex Voll; his brothers Henry (Mary Ann) Chandler of South Bend, IN and Dennis (Cynthia) Chandler of Cartersville, GA; his sister Mary (Bruce) Woodcox of Mishawaka, IN; his cousin Susan Hartman, many other relatives and friends.
