Rev. Edmund Webster's Obituary
Fr. Edmund R. Webster passed on to his eternal home on Sunday, November 11, 2007. The former pastor of St. Marks Episcopal Church in Waupaca, he was well known for his spiritual and community leadership. Fr. Webster was born in West DePere on September 30, 1909, the son of the late Solomon and Eliza (John) Webster. He was a member of the Oneida Tribe of Wisconsin. Father Webster graduated from Menasha High School in 1930, was the class president and an outstanding athlete. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in philosophy from Lawrence University in 1939 and later a Master of Divinity from Nashotah House Seminary in 1950. Following his ordination on Nov. 1, 1950, he served congregations in Chilton, Plymouth, Waupaca and Amherst. He was also chaplain at the Grand Army Home in King for four years and served as a supply pastor in many congregations until he was 88 years of age.
Father Webster married Barbara Simmons on August 24, 1935 in Menasha. The couple had two children, E. Lee (Barbara) Webster and Barbara (Robert) Munson. They were grandparents to six grandchildren, Tim, Erin, Joy, Brett, Chris and Ken and fourteen great grandchildren that survive him. Barbara preceded him in death in 2001. Recognized as a community leader Fr. Ed was credited with revitalizing the Waupaca Ministerial Association shortly after his move to Waupaca in 1957. He was an honorary life member of the Waupaca Lions Club. A November 13, 1975 Waupaca County Post article identified him as having a reputation of caring. He participated in many community service organizations including: The American Cancer Society, Community Action, the local chapter for the mentally retarded, Committee on Aging, Girl Scouts, American Field Service, and Red Cross. He was actively involved in organizing the Waupaca County Drug and Alcoholism Board. Fr. Webster was honored by the Governor as one of Wisconsin's Ten Most Admired Senior Citizens in 1990. His family, friends and members of his congregation will fondly remember him for his strong faith which he exemplified in his sincere, steady, and gentle nature. A Memorial service for Father Edmund Webster will be held at St. Marks Episcopal Church in Waupaca on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 6:30 PM with The Right Reverend Russell Jacobus, Bishop of the Diocese of Fond du Lac, officiating. Internment will be at the Cathedral of St. Paul the Apostle Cemetery in Fond du Lac on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 10 AM. Visitation will be at St. Marks Episcopal Church from 5 to 6:30 PM on Weds. evening. In lieu of flowers a memorial will be established. Holly Funeral Home in Waupaca is assisting the family with arrangements.
