Richard J. De Terville's Obituary
Richard J. De Terville, age 93, of Waupaca, WI, peacefully embarked on his next great adventure entering eternity on Tuesday, October 8, 2024. Born on March 24, 1931, at St. Mary's Hospital in Green Bay, WI, Richard was the beloved son of Norman L. and Cecilia R. (Dachlet) De Terville.
A proud graduate of Green Bay’s West High School, Class of 1949, Richard continued his studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1954. Shortly after, he served his country in the U.S. Army as a medic, and later in the National Guard, where his dedication to helping others became apparent. His commitment to the field of pharmacy remained steadfast throughout his life.
Upon completing his service, Richard returned to Wisconsin to pursue his passion for pharmaceutical work. In 1957, he became employed as a pharmacist at Stratton's Drug Store, and eventually became co-owner. He served in this capacity for over two decades for the Waupaca community. Richard often made Rx deliveries to nearby nursing homes after work hours and his genuine compassion and professionalism endeared him to many. Even after selling the store in 1983, Richard continued his career, serving veterans at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, where he worked until his retirement in July 1994.
On September 14, 1963, Richard married Jeannette M. Mallen in Waupaca. Together, they raised three children, each of whom reflects his values of perseverance, curiosity, and kindness. Richard and Jeannette later divorced in 1984.
Richard’s adventurous spirit was perhaps most evident in his love for the great outdoors. An avid canoeist, he cherished summers spent paddling through the Canada Boundary Waters, savoring the peace and beauty of the wilderness. He also found joy in visiting the library, swimming, skiing—remaining active on the slopes until age 73—and cycling, a passion that took him on European and New Zealand bike tours and something he enjoyed right up until his final days. His zest for life was infectious, and he was a frequent participant in the annual Waupaca Lions Club’s 4th of July BBQ, where he was a member and contributed to the community he loved so dearly.
Richard is survived by his three children: Jo Ann Vann of Boulder, CO, and her children Cody, Kate, and Ray; Paul De Terville of Saddlebrook, MO; and William (Maureen) De Terville of Green Bay, WI, and their children Elliott and Ella. He also leaves behind his siblings, Sue Mogenson of Green Bay, WI; Joan (John) Neuschel of Luxemburg, WI; and Robert (Carla) De Terville of Green Bay, WI, along with their children Eric and Justin. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Norman and Cecilia De Terville.
Richard's warmth, wisdom, and adventurous nature will be deeply missed by his family and friends. The family wishes to express much gratitude for the loving care and kindness received from ThedaCare hospital and hospice team in Richard’s final months, along with the many years of friendship from his wonderful neighbors. In honoring his wishes, there will be no formal funeral services. A private family celebration of his remarkable life will be held at a later date. The Holly Funeral Home of Waupaca is assisting the family with arrangements.
