Robert "Bob" V. LaFreniere's Obituary
Robert Vincent LaFreniere
July 10, 1935 – August 25, 2025
Robert Vincent LaFreniere passed away peacefully at home on Monday, August 25, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born July 10, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois, to Robert Louis and Eileen (Dernbach) LaFreniere, Bob grew up in Berwyn during the Depression, where he quickly learned the value of a dollar, the importance of hard work, and the joy of family. Summers were spent at Sister Lakes, Michigan, where his grandparents owned a small resort and where many of his happiest childhood memories were made. These early summers inspired him to create similar traditions for his own family at Big Hills Lake in Wild Rose, Wisconsin, where he spent his later years. Wicked smart and a standout in school, Bob carried that sharp mind throughout his life.
Bob served as a Marine Corps Reservist before beginning his long career at ComEd. He started out as a tree trimmer and worked his way up to journeyman lineman, dedicating over 40 years of service and forming many friendships that lasted a lifetime. Retirement didn’t slow him down and he went on to create his own small handyman and electrician business where he became known as the man who could fix just about anything.
Bob loved fishing until the infamous day a Northern Pike in Canada convinced him otherwise. From then on, he turned his attention to other passions: keeping his lawn perfectly mowed, burning brush piles, and happily enjoying a “sammich” made by his wife, Ruth.
Bob was the beloved husband of Ruth Louise (Meilahn); loving father to Scott (Heather), Kathy, and Cheryl; proud grandfather to Jake, Sarah, and Gabie; and delighted great-grandfather to Kyrie. He was also a dear brother to Darlene and Ronald, uncle to many nieces and nephews, and preceded in death by his sister Linda.
Per Bob’s wishes, burial will be private. A celebration of life will be held at a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, he would encourage you to play a slot at your favorite local establishment.
He will be remembered for his humor, his sharp mind, his endless ability to fix what was broken, and his deep love for his family. Bob’s life was one well-lived, and his spirit will live on in all the stories, laughter, and love he leaves behind. The Holly Funeral Home of Wild Rose is assisting the family with arrangements.
