DR. ROBERT L. STEVENSON
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (FORMERLY OF POY SIPPI, WI) Age 65 – died on Saturday, November 25, 2006 in Raleigh, NC. He was born on January 11, 1941 in the Township of Saxeville, Waushara County, WI, a son of the late Clifford and Leone (Cate) Stevenson. Robert is survived by his sister: Dianne (Floyd) Roegner of Grafton, WI, a nephew: Steven Roegner of Menomonee Falls, WI, a niece: Sharon (Robby Wieler) Tolia of Shorewood, WI, and a great nephew: Andrew Tolia-Wieler of Shorewood, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant sister: Patricia Jean Stevenson. Robert was a graduate of, and had been the salutatorian of, the Berlin High School class of 1959. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He received his PhD from the University of Washington – Seattle. He served in the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam War. He had served with the Army Intelligence Department. He was awarded the Bronze Star, and at the time of his discharge, he had attained the rank of Captain. Following his military service, Robert became a Kenan Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. He started his teaching career in 1975 and taught for over 30 years. He had lectured in more than 25 countries and logged more than a million frequent-flier miles. By his career’s end, stamps from 60 countries filled his passport. His gift was mentoring and teaching graduate students who have since launched their own teaching careers. A funeral mass will be held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Poy Sippi, WI on Saturday, December 2, 2006 at 11:00 AM, with Father Jerome Taddy, officiating. Interment will be in the Poy Sippi Cemetery. Friends may call at the Holly Funeral Home in Poy Sippi, WI on Saturday morning from 9:30 -11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are appreciated, and can be directed to the American Heart Association in memory of Robert L. Stevenson. The Holly Funeral Home of Poy Sippi, WI is assisting the family with arrangements.
