Shirley M. Cross' Obituary
Shirley Mae Cross (Nee Walter) 89, entered the glory of her heavenly home on May 16, 2024.
Our sweet Shirley was born March 16, 1935 to Lester and Lucille Walter in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. She graduated in 1953 with her high school sweetheart Jerry Buttles, whom she later married and had four children with. After the painful loss of her husband, she was blessed to find love again when she married Jerry Cross. Shirley was a hard-working woman who worked multiple jobs which included a long employment as bookkeeper at the Weyauwega Red Owl Store; however, she will be remembered, moreover, as a proprietor and kind barkeeper of the Chimney Inn in Weyauwega where people came to find her friendly smiling service, much loved chili, and a challenging game of cribbage or sheepshead.
Shirley loved to travel the country as well as abroad. Despite every hardship and challenge she faced, her optimism and pure heartedness were center stage and unrivaled; she was a much-loved heroine and steadfast mentor to her family as well as so many who knew and loved her. Shirley had many gifts and talents and faced every day gracefully and boldly. She enjoyed needlepoint, word games and puzzles, knitting, crocheting, and decorating. Despite her sweet demeanor she was a master at keeping the Shenannigan Crew in line and out of jail.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Lucille Walter, her husband Jerry Buttles, her husband Gerald Cross, her much loved daughter ShanAnne, and her brother James (Jimmy) Walter. She is survived by her sons Mark (Becky) Buttles, Kent (Jodi) Buttles and Keith (Kim) Buttles, Her Stepchildren Gerald Cross and Sue Cruz, her Sisters, Linda (Tom) Bochinski, Louise (Sam) Anderson, as well as many adored grandchildren, great grandchildren and selected "family" members of the heart.
The world is a better place for the life Shirley lived and the people she touched in her time here. She will be so greatly missed and so fondly remembered; we owe Shirley so much gratitude for teaching us what love and kindness truly are. Feel free to join us in her memory to celebrate her life.
