Sigmond A. Mesunas' Obituary
Sigmond A. Mesunas, 92, a resident of the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King, WI, formerly of Waupaca, died Thursday evening, September 15, 2005. Sigmond was born October 18, 1912, in Butte, North Dakota. He attended local schools and worked on his family's farm. Sigmond served in the US Army during WWII from 1943-1945. During this time, Sigmond was involved in combat operations in the Philippines, New Guinea, Northern Solomons, Bismarck Archipelago, Luzon, and Ryukyus. His awards and decorations include the American Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 1 Silver and 2 Bronze Battle Stars, Bronze Service Arrowhead, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Battle Star, 4 Overseas Service Bars, 1 Service Stripe, and Good Conduct Medal. Sigmond married his wife, Lorraine on June 5, 1954 in Chicago, IL. They moved to Waupaca in 1955 where he farmed for many years along with working at the Waupaca Foundry. He was a member of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Knights of Columbus. Survivors include a son, David, Waupaca; three daughters: Cynthia Mandeville (Brian), Stevens Point; Janis Elder (Leigh), LaCrosse; Karen Notbohm, Eau Claire; ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Sigmond was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine, parents, two brothers, and two sisters. Funeral Services will be held Monday, September 19 at 11:30 AM at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church with Father Paul Vanden Hogan officiating. Visitation will be Sunday afternoon from 1:00 - 4:00 PM at Holly Funeral Home in Waupaca. Interment will take place in Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery at King.
