Steve was a law school classmate, but we really didn’t get acquainted until I worked extensively with him and Steve Hansen and their firm beginning in the early ‘80’s. On my many trips to Waupaca, business had to wait until Steve & Steve finished their morning Cribbage game. Steve and his brother, Tom, convinced me and Mary Jane to take a look at a cottage they had acquired and renovated on Rainbow Lake in the early ‘90’s. One look was all it took for Mary Jane and we spent many years enjoying the Chain, including the company of Steve & Mary Jo on many occasions. Fond memories of parties on Brown Lake and dinners at the Country Club, Simpsons and elsewhere in the area. Just a good guy whose contributions to the community will be honored and missed. I knew Steve through a mutual friend and neighbor of his on Brown Lane, and I was fortunate enough to be conferred with a seat on the Village Inn Board (VIBOD). As Steve's obituary states, that group of locals--and this sole Chicagoan--met primarily for laughs and Coors Light-fed good cheer. I do take issue, however, with the implication that the group's gatherings were exclusively social. I clearly remember business affairs--like the distribution of quarters from the Village Inn's coin-operated laundry machines--and my own distribution of brewery-procured Coors Light-branded merch--being treated with the seriousness they deserved. Those were very, very good times, and Steve (and Tom) were at the heart of it all.

My condolences to Mary Jo--who graciously permitted the above lunacy--and all the Shambeaus. May God bless you all with solace, and may He welcome Steve, perhaps with some heavenly version of that Rocky Mountain beer.

Steve, Rudy Schmidt, and I, all Wisconsin Beta Brothers, shared an apartment together while Steve attended law school and I dental school. I know I was the "roommate from hell" but we shared a synergistic relationship. I needed to graduate from dental school and Steve needed dental work . It worked out perfectly for both of us! He also drafted my first will.
Steve, I'll never forget your patience and kindness.

I offer my deepest condolences to Mary Jo, Mollie and Matthew on your profound loss. Steve was truly a good man. The kind of good that is rare to find amoung men.

I met Steve in 1982 when I was staying with my Aunt Helen on Rainbow lake for the summer. We spent many happy days on the Chain of Lakes he so loved. I will remember his sense of humor, his kindness and generosity, our lengthy discussions about philosophy and religions and a memorable drive to Madison to watch his beloved Badgers.

I know he is now with God and at peace.
He can be proud of a life well lived.

I will always remember Steve and Mary Jo ‘s Love story and whirlwind romance. Wonderful life filled with family , friends, laughter and memories made.
