Verlyn R. Scheider's Obituary
Verlyn R. Scheider, age 90, passed away on Saturday, September 9th, 2017 in Waupaca, where he has resided since selling his family farm in rural Almond in 2016. He was born in the Town of Buena Vista, Portage County, WI on November 23, 1926, a son of the late Robert and Dora (Duetscher) Scheider.
Verlyn was baptized at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in the town of Buena Vista, where he later confirmed his faith. Verlyn attended Sunnyside Grade School and the Almond High School in Almond. When his father, Rob died in 1941, Verlyn took over the family farm for a period of time and then worked at American Motors in Milwaukee until 1950 when he entered the U.S. Army to serve for two years during the Korean War. He returned to American Motors and worked there for 31 years until retiring to his farm in 1980. Verlyn was an active member of the American Legion Post 339 in Almond; he loved playing the harmonica, played baseball and was manager of the Moore Barn Baseball Team for many years. He also enjoyed riding and breaking horses, traveling the United States, Canada and Mexico. Verlyn loved playing music, he played the tuba, mouth organ and the accordion.
Unmarried, Verlyn was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers - Darrell and Donovan, and his dear friend, June DuFrane, of Clintonville. He is survived by several nieces.
A Graveside Service and Military Honors will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Town of Buena Vista, Portage Co. WI at 10 AM on Friday, September 15th, 2017. Following the service, it was Verlyn's wish that there be a gathering at the American Legion Post in Almond.
