Vernon S. Johnson
Waupaca, WI age 83, passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2009 at Appleton Medical Center in Appleton, WI. He was born on April 16, 1926 in the Township of Scandinavia, Waupaca Co., WI, the son of James and Margaret (Nelson) Johnson. He married Lucille J. Taggart on October 2, 1948 in Waupaca. Vernon is survived by his wife, Lucille, two sons; Ray (Marcia) Johnson of Casa Grande, AZ, and Stanley Johnson of Waupaca, a daughter; June “J.J.” Johnson of Waupaca, grandchildren; Sandra (Rick) Pellerino of Waupaca, Melissa (Brian) Ausland of Anoka, MN, and Laurie (Sam) Higginson of Casa Grande, AZ, and great grandchildren; Sarah Kaye and Tyler Pellerino, Brady, Connor, and Hailey Ausland, and Miranda and Austin Higginson. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister; Gladys Buntrock, and brothers; Richard, Myron, and LaVern Johnson. Vernon had served in the U.S. Navy during WW II from June of 1944 until November of 1947. He was stationed on the flagship when the atomic bomb testing was done in the Bikini Islands. He returned to Waupaca after serving his country and worked at the Home Lumber and Supply Co., and Fullerton Lumber Co. for many years before briefly opening his own lumber and supply company. He had also worked for Waupaca Brick Sales for a number of years. He had been the part time Director of Waupaca County Emergency Management. After ten years as part time director the position became a full time position and he remained director for another 17 years, retiring in 1989. Vernon was also involved with organizing the Waupaca City Police Auxiliary and the Waupaca County Deputy Sheriff’s Reserve Association. He had also been an alderman for many years. At Vernon’s request no funeral services were held. Interment was in the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery at King, WI. The Holly Funeral Home of Waupaca, WI assisted the family with arrangements.
