Walter L. Radley's Obituary
Walter L. Radley, age 86, of Slinger, WI formally of Waupaca & Oshkosh passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at Serenity Villa Assisted Living in Slinger. Walter was born in Town of Dayton, Waupaca County on August 20, 1924, the son of the late Walter Lee and Beatrice (Caldwell) Radley. Walter graduated from Waupaca High School in 1942 and soon after joined the US Navy. He served as a Gunnery expert and Crew Chief on Motor Torpedo Boats (PT's) in the Solomon Islands and Philippine seas during WW II. Since that time, he had been a dedicated supporter of the US Navy. After the war, he married Donna Jean Hanson on September 7, 1947 in Tulsa, OK where he was attending the Spartan School of Aeronautics. Walter worked as a Mechanical Designer for 43 years. He was a past member of the American Society of Tool & Manufacturing Engineers, worked actively as PTA President and other positions in both the South Park and Jacob Sharpiro Schools in Oshkosh and was a hard working member of the First United Methodist Church in Oshkosh. For eight years he held leadership positions in both Cub Scouting and the Boy Scouting programs in Oshkosh. He was also actively engaged for several years with the P.T. Boat Inc. Veterans organization of Memphis, TN. He was also a member of the Parfreyville United Methodist Church in Waupaca. As a hobby, he enjoyed writing true stories and poetry. He had many published pieces to his credit. Walter also enjoyed sailing and helping his wife with her passion for flowers and their cultivation but mostly by being a responsible father and guide to his family. Walter is survived by his sons: Reverend Jeffrey (Dorthy) Radley, Slinger, WI and Daniel (Shelley) Radley, Barron, WI;his daughter: Melissa (John) Radley-McConnell, Orlando, FL; his three grandchildren, Harmony & Ashley Radley and Johnny McConnell and a very special and loving friend, Doris Parse of Fremont and many nieces and nephews. Walter was preceded in death by his wife Donna, his parents, a brother John and two sisters Virginia Radley and Joyce Grove. Funeral Services will be on Saturday, March 26 at 1 PM at First United Methodist Church, Waupaca with Reverend Joan Frost & Reverend Jeffrey Radley, officiating. Burial beside his wife with Military Honors will follow in the Crystal Lake Cemetery,Town of Dayton. Visitation will be on Friday evening from 4 to 7 PM at the Holly Funeral Home in Waupaca and on Saturday morning from 12 Noon until the time of services at the church. Memorials appreciated to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or PT Boats Inc. or Parfreyville United Methodist Church.
