When I worked with Pete he gave nicknames to the 2 youngest guys on his crew. He gave the nicknames Fritzie to Ken Huber and Hansie to me.. Hansie and Fritzie were the young trouble makers in "The Katzenjammer Kids" cartoon strip that was popular back in the 1950s. Of course Pete was "Der Captain" the cartoon character who tried to control the 2 scheming youngsters. After we were blessed with the nicknames Ken and I always greeted each other as Hansie and Fritzie. The names Rich and Ken became a thing of the past for us.
Pete invited me to fish with him and his dad in Huron Bay on Lake Superior in the early 1970s, I believe. That was a lifetime fishing highlight, as they guided me to a large Steelhead Trout - an exciting catch for me.
When I began birdwatching in the early 1960s Pete would help me identify birds whenever he could. He occasionally when used names that were not in my bird watching guide. My favorite "Pete name" for a bird is Timberdoodle. For anyone who is interested knowing what a Timberdoodle I would urge you Google it.
Shortly after I joined Pete's survey crew in 1960 Pete and two other members of the crew encouraged me to get a college degree. I enrolled at the U. of Wyoming in September 1960. I transferred to the U. of Wisconsin in 1961 and graduated in 1964. I am grateful for that guidance. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. By the way, I met my wife at the U.of Wisconsin and our marriage was a very happy one.
Thank you Pete for your guidance and the fond memories. May you rest in peace, as you should be very proud of the life you lived. My condolences to Pete's daughters and all the other relatives he left behind
