Tribute to Charlie
Charles was an incredible man, and had a wonderful life as he lived each day to the fullest.
He had high standards, worked hard, had fun, walked the talk and was a role model to many.
He was dedicated to his family and had an amazing partnership with his beautiful wife Jean, for over 65 years. He gave his utmost attention to the Amherst Telephone Company, continuing the legacy of his father and grandfather and enabling others to build the company into the success it is today with the reslience to survive alongside the big players. And as outlined earlier, he was involved in many community groups and sporting associations all his life.
Charles always had a positive, can-do attitude, was well organised, determined and someone who knew where they stood on things.
He had many interests from golf, to travel, deer hunting, crafting furniture and toys from the wood on his property, fixing phone lines in all weathers, and everything in between. And was someone who loved people and was willing to share his world with others, which is how I met him when I arrived in Amherst, just over 50 years ago at the age of 17. Jean, Charles, Tom, Richard and Brian welcomed me into their family and then two weeks later we went on a camper van trip to Colorado (yes, all of us), and the rest is history.
I learnt so many things from Charlie - to have strong values, to volunteer for your community, how to schedule your day to do as much as possible, to enjoy cherry pies and camping. Last time we were together 3 years ago, we went for a walk in the woods - Charlie on his ride-on and me alongside (so special).
Always with a cheerful and generous heart and making the most of every hour right up until he said goodbye - A giant oak tree has fallen and is at rest now.
