Donald J. Shulfer's Obituary
Donald J. "Donnie" Shulfer age 91, died peacefully on Sunday, February 18, 2024 at Whispering Pines Assisted Living Facility. Don was born Aug. 21, 1932, in the town of Stockton, a son of the late Antone and Barbara (Glodowski) Shulfer. At the age of 18 he went to Milwaukee to enter the workforce and worked until he was drafted to the Army. He served from 1953-1955. He was honorably discharged as a corporal. He married Hazel Helbach on August 3, 1957, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Lanark. They lived in Milwaukee until they purchased their farm in Amherst in 1961. He was a pipefitter in construction and farmed with his family. He loved the farm, gardening, Polka and Country music and enjoyed making memories with his grandchildren. He was very mechanically inclined to fix anything that could be fixed on the farm. He enjoyed to travel, including visiting every state in the U.S. Don spent over 30 years in town government as a supervisor or chairman. He was a lector at St. James Catholic Church. He belonged to the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign War.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel; two sons, Michael (Veronica) Shulfer, Amherst; Gary (Michelle) Shulfer, Stevens Point; one daughter Elizabeth Slowinski, Stevens Point. He has one sister, Arlene Domaszek, Whispering Pines, Plover; and one brother Leroy, Amherst Junction. Don had eight grandchildren; Rachael Henning, Lisa Henning, Rebekah (Morgan) Sheets, Theresa and Tim Shulfer, Zachary Shulfer, Philip and Carson Slowinski and one great-grandchild, Sawyer Sheets.
Don was preceded in death by his parents Antone and Barbara (Glodowski) Shulfer; a daughter (Mary Henning) and son-in-law(Kurt Henning); three brothers, Gregory, Leonard, and Richard.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at 11 A.M. at St. James Catholic Church in Amherst. Father Jerzy Rebacz will officiate with burial to follow at St. James Catholic Cemetery in Amherst. A visitation will be held on Monday, March 4, 2024 from 4 P.M. until 7 P.M. at the Jungers-Holly Funeral Home in Amherst, with a Rosary Service at 7 P.M. and again on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at the Church from 10 A.M. until the time of the mass at 11 A.M.
The family would like to express their thanks for the care given to him at Davita, Whispering Pines and from Heartland Hospice Care. Every night, Don would tell his caregivers “sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite.”
