I am so very sorry for the loss to his family. Gene came into my life at a time when I was faultering in my faith and needed the strength of a mentor, friend, and father figure. We continue to have struggles in our lives, but I think of Gene and his faith and love of his family and it continues to bring me back to the fold. I enjoyed all of the time that we spent together and will never forget him. I have been in contact through Kurt S. during Gene's treatments and final weeks at home, knowing during these times that family is the most important. But my thoughts and prayers were with him and Sherrie during this time. I was fortunate to meet both sons, Bart and Todd and know that when Gene and I travelled together during our work together at Roadready, Gene would talk with pride about his sons. It is always a pleasure to listen to someone that I feel honored to have known, to be able to speak so often and with pride about his sons, daughters, and grandchildren, and to be able to spend so many hours with him. Finally, I will always remember Gene with a smile on his face or a hearty laugh at a good story. I remember his enjoyment of a sandwich that was not a sandwich if it was not dripping with some sauce. I remember all of the trucking stories, appropriate and inappropriate. I remember that sometimes we would be frustrated, but it never lasted and how loyal he was to me during our troubling times. I remember being taught to not take yourself too seriously and being humble. I remember how much he taught me about transportation and people and family and faith.
Thank you Gene Scharrer for being a good friend and a good role model at the right time in my life. I am a better father and man because of you and am proud to have met you. Sincerely and with love,
Marty Robbins
