I first met Tom sometime in the Nineties, and not too long after that I was honored with a position on the Village Inn Board of Directors (VIBOD). Actually, that "honor" was bestowed mainly because, as the top ad agency guy on the Coors business, I could procure no-cost Coors Light-branded merchandise for the board members. I have no doubts there are still closets full of the stuff in and around Waupaca. Those were very good days with lots of fun afloat on the Chain and in any number of local watering holes. Ultimately, Pete Coors even joined the VIBOD group hosting the group at his Coors Field skybox. Tom was always at the heart of the fun. As a Navy veteran, he took some delight in needling me for my Army loyalty. He'd call every year when USAA made its distributions to members, so we could compare who got more cash back. Tom's was a very joy-filled spirit and it remains very strong in my memory.
My sincere condolences to Kris, whose support for Tom never waned in spite of the sort of shenanigans described above. And to son, Dave, of whom Tom spoke proudly to me on a number of occasions.
Godspeed, Tom. I'll see you on the other side... and I'll try to bring a Coors Light baseball cap.
